I don't have time to got to any junkyards, but used parts are more difficult to find; last year it took some effort to find a good used 617 engine. The first two I had shipped were junk, I got lucky on the third.

So the 1980 300d turned out to be a 1980 300sd w116 chassis? I have a w116 300sd and live in Phoenix. I need a few things for it. Can you tell me specifically which pick and pull you were at?

the last one within 50 miles of me got crushed back in fall of 09. They are so rusted by the time they make it to the yard, that body panels are less useful. Then some yahoo traditionally comes and pulls the oil cap, or injectors or whatnot, leaves the hood open, and the engine fills up with snow and water when it otherwise might still be good.
Its a shame.
I used to do that when I was younger, but now if I need some piece of the engine that would allow elements in I usually try and cover it back up. If there is no hood, I go for an old trunk panel or something, just in case someone wants something engine related non contaminated.

The cash for clunkers program got rid of most of the 123's in the dallas area Pick N pulls.

They are starting to show back up now.

Even found a euro !

The clunker program was only for cars less than 20 years old.

This is true. but they had so many clunkers coming through, everything got wiped out to make room for the clunkers. then the clunkers were getting pushed through as fast as they could to make room for the next batch of clunkers.

I did post that 84SD that came in under the clunker program. think that was about 3 months ago.

But I wouldn't go as far as to say that the days of the salvage yard w123 are gone. The w123's I typically see are earlier models pre 1980. I'd guess there are twice the amount of the eariler vs. 83+ model year w123's at the yards at any given time.

So maybe its just a lull and lots of 1982-1985 w123's are still on the road and being nicely maintained...

I've never seen a w123 wagon in three years at a yard in San Diego.
I went to the Richmond Pick N Pull a couple weeks ago.. there are some new arrivals.. like two 240Ds and four or five 300s.. half of them are almost complete cars.. no joke.

The cash for clunkers flodded into the the Pick n Pull lots and pushed out the 123's

Yes, it was a brown 116 . . . pretty trashed . . . row 14 I believe in the SE of Phoenix, not sure exactly the address, but it was the next exit West on the I-10, past the 202, take a right, second light go left (north) I believe it was 56th street, about a block up on the right.

Most of the yards in Tucson don't let you in . . . or they don't have Mercedes . . .

I hit 2 PNP yesterday looking for a R/R 123 light assembly. only one 83 300D w/o the tail lights. quite a few 126 gassers, one clunker with 111k. one had an engine fire with almost perfect red burgundy leather interior. saw my first M/L in a PNP. another clunker with almost perfect interior.

The E-Bay junkies are right in there, so as quick as the cars are set, they are jumping in to strip the good parts. says he makes 6k on E-bay ea month.
It`s either this crew in the beginning, or the second crew that destroys what is left.

Last year and the year before, there were a lot on 123`s in there.

I might go back to that 123, the vacuume pump looked to have been just put on. the aluminium didn`t match the surrounding grease and grime. and can see what looks like Permatex gasket sealer that is clean.
