Can't believe I did it. Regular unleaded in my 300D!
OK, so I'm nuts. I put about 8 gallons of regular unleaded in my 300D before I even realized what I was doing. Talk about not having your head in the game. Good thing 1.) I was four blocks from my regular MB shop, 2.) they were still open at 5:30, and 3.) they will be draining the tank tomorrow.
Oh well, that was a little expensive as mistakes go, but a burnt engine would be worse. |
How empty was your tank? You probably could have filled it up with regular diesel and gotten away with your little faux pas :o

I wouldn't want more than about 10% gas in my tank.

I did just the opposite!
I was 5 hours from home in our new van and put about 4 gallons of diesel in the tank. I topped it off with premium and headed home. All was well!
I put 6 gallons of RUG in my '85 SD a few years back. I made it one block from the station. Towed it home and pumped out the tank with my 12v fuel pump. There was more gas in the tank than diesel so I put what I pumped out into my '84 Chevy Silverado. That was a mistake! Like to have killed the Chevy! LOL! Gotta love having cars that don't like the same drinks! |
Yeah, I had 8 gallons or so mixed with approximately 3 gallons of diesel, with about 4 gallons or so of room left. Topping up the tank was no longer an option unfortunately, as I can't justify a rebuild or a swap in this car, as much as I love it. It could have been a total loss.
Here's why it happenned. I went to fill up where I always go, same station, same pump, only someone was at the SIDE I usually fill up at. So I went to the other side. Now the individual pumps are mirror images of each other, so the diesel is on the right of one side and the left of the other. being in the habit of going to the same place all the time, I grabbed the pump handle to the right, which would have been diesel on my regular side. It was of course unleaded fuel. I had a 20% off harbor freight coupon in my pocket and was on my way to buy a vice and ended up visiting my Mercedes mechanic. I did not have a 20% off coupon for his shop. $200 I expect. I'm still going to get that vice today damit. |
one of my buddies called me the other day in a panic.
he had just put 5gallons of rug in his 83 SD. with a 21gallon tank, I told him 5 gallons is not terrible, fill it to the brim, with deisel, and I mean BRIM. several clicks up the neck, and that will be a 25% mix basically. should be OK, I told him if he is worried about it, to drop a small bottle of 2cycle oil in there, the 2.5 oz should make up for any lubricity loss. |
Damn, that's like aiming a gun at someone with you're finger on the trigger and then realizing it's your buddy. Driving away would have been the shot, good think you caught it.
In case you're wondering what to do with the mix, you could probably throw it into a more than half full oil furnace tank, or do a 80:20 or 60:40 diesel-RUG/bio blend. |
