THANK YOU for the heads up .
Their website looks nice , screw them . I'll go to plan # 2 : overhauling my old OM617.952 engine instead . Another stupid question : I was pricing engine kits and it seems the pistons come in sets with the liners ~ are OM617 engines " Wet Liners " ? all the ones I've seen headless appear to be pressed in cylinders.... If I yank my head off and find it needs boring , I'll junk the block and buy another , they're cheap @ $ 250.00 fan to clutch including IP and all accessories . I just didn't want to get stuck in a overhaul job if I could afford it because I can no longer do it and have to trust another Mechanic to touch the nether regions of my baby . It needs about $2,000 worth of ancilliary parts too .

You don't have to get an "overhaul kit" if it has parts you don't want.
However if you get new standard size pistons and ring, you will need new liners so they will fit the new pistons. You could keep the liners you have if you get oversized pistons and rings, but you will have to take the block to a machine shop to get the piston sleeves bored and honed. But since you have to take the block in to get the sleeves removed and the new ones pressed in, give him the new pistons and they will bore/hone as needed for the new ones.

if you get new liners and pistons, you will have to go to a machine shop for installation and fitting to the pistons.

Have you run a compression test and leakdown test? If you have chronic rough running you may be down on compression in one cylinder. That could be a valve or something in the bottom end. If it is a turbo motor the head gaskets often need replaced at 250 to 300K miles. At that time there is usually some valve work needed as well.
The bottom end is very durable unless abused by dirty or low oil or coolant. The pistons are often in very good shape and can be reused. I have rebuilt ( had it done by my very competant local machinist) a half dozen mercedes motors and we have always replaced the liners and all but one we reused the pistons because they measured well within the tolerances specified by the FSM. A compression and leak down test is essential to keep from flying blind. The parts are so expensive and the time required to disassemble and reassemble these motors it gets expensive fast so it pays to do your homework.

I did a compression test and the # 5 cylinder is low , it's also the one that smokes & misses until it warms up and begins to fire .
Even @ hot idle this cylinder is weak . I'm waffling , thinking it'd be better to find a low mileage takeout and re-seal it then drive happy as I tend my cars *very* carefully so it should last me a long time .

I have not ran across a lot of unethical businesses getting parts over the years for my cars but ADSIT is definitely one of them. I can't believe they are still in business.
Good luck on finding a engine or rebuilding yours.

Metric Motors is fantastic! They did a great job on my friends 606 head.
Mercedes engines gas or diesel are EXTREMLY expensive to do internal work on. The diesels are actualy cheap, you should see what an M119 or M120 costs to rebuild...

That is what I did last year, and they did a superb job, were very helpful, and did not charge out of line with other machine shops. If you are in Southern California it is that much easier.

Go to Mercedes directly, they actually don't charge as much as you'd think and you've got the genuine factory parts and warranty. Call the classic center.
