W124 Trannys swappable?

Would a 1992 W124 300D 2.5T auto tranny fit into a 1987 300TD ? What about a Gas W124 TD transmission ?

Thanks

The transmission on the 2.5L is a 722.4xx IIRC, and the '87 has the stronger version 722.3xx. A "gas W124 TD"? Do you mean a gas T124 TE? If you do, ... yes it will "fit". It will have different shift points, different gearing IIRC, the same 1:1 4th gear, and a different stall speed (torque converter). It will also have the annoying 2nd-gear start of the M103-powered cars.

Is this the same posting as on the tech forum?

Thanks. Babymog. I guess i did cross post this. Wasn't sure if diesel people read the tech gas forum. Sorry about that.

This is great to know. I wonder if you could adjust shift points with the vacuum modulator and or bowden cable enough to be satisfactory? I'm looking at a couple parts cars and trying to see what i might could possibly use. If i end up swapping an odd tranny in my car i'll post back with the results. hopefully i wont have to for a long time.

Another question -- how long to trannys last sitting? Can you let a car sit for many years and the tranny will stay good? Trial and error would be the only way anyone would ever know this i think.

You could use the valve body and torque-converter from the diesel in the gasser transmission to come close, provided there is no contamination in either.

Could last a while, but I'd avoid a transmission that has been sitting for more than a few months just because the seals can dry out and cause problems.

To store a transmission, fill to the top with ATF. Drain/change/refill when installing.
