300TD exhaust. (pictures)

When I open the driver side window I can smell exhaust fumes (no smell when window closed). After a quick search here, looks like the my exhaust pipe might be the problem.

Can't see any obvious leak but it seems that the PO did some work on the exhaust (mid section welding) and I wonder if the pipe is not a bit too short allowing some fumes to be sucked in through the rear hatch.

So here are some pictures, can you tell if your 300TD exhaust looks similar or not.

Thank you.

Sorry.
Yes it is with the car moving.
Checked in engine and can t see or smell exhaust. If window is closed with heater blower max blast, can t smell anything.
The only time i smell fumes is:

1)- car moving
2)- front (left or right) window open
3)- heater blower on or off does not make any difference.

Biodiesel300td

Is your exhaust, on your 300td, looks like the one on the pictures? Or doest it look like mine is a few inches shorter?

Thanks

My exhaust looks like yours and the '84 TD I'm fixing for a friend looks similar but kicks out to the side. Both are tucked under the car though.

I agree with Andrew to check under the hood. My TD had a loose exhaust manifold and was able to be tightened to seal the leak off.

If you find out you need to take it to a shop to have it welded, I had a good experience with Ballard radiator and muffler. They'll do whatever you need them to and I feel I got a good price.

when you have one window open you are creating a Venturi effect which is exacerbating the fact that the rear hatch experiences a constant vacuum at higher speeds.

the Venturi effect sucks the exhaust that is caught in the vacuous region behind the hatch and pulls it into a cabin.

the rear hatch seal is most likely the culprit.

to avoid the fumes, w/o replacing the seal, open another window, preferably a rear window. If opening more windows does not solve it, you may have an exhaust leak or an oil leak on to a hot surface.

Your description does sound like it may be coming in around thehatch seal. Temporarily use some flexiable pipe to extend the exhaust pipe to another area to verify should be cheap. Usually if there are fumes under the hood the only way to get rid of them is to run the blower motor with the windows up giving you constant pressure as well.

This effect could easily include leakage at the rear hatch. On many diesels thats why the blower motors are worn out. They were used by the owners constantly on long trips especialy if they had a lot of previous diesel car owner experiences. Those fumes are really bad for you. Can easily make you sick in reasonably small concentrations over a long distance.

I can smell fumes sometimes if the rear hatch is not shut tight. Your exhaust looks the same as mine.

Did some more troubleshooting this afternoon and If I extend the exhaust (using flexpipe) the problem stops. Looks like it is coming through the rear hatch.... I checked the hatch seal, looks good but I guess it is worn or the hatch does not close properly...

Thanks

Found out last night that the rear hatch seal was replaced 3 years ago. I guess that s why it looked so good..

Is there any way to adjust the rear hatch such way that it will seat a bit tighter on the frame.
I noticed this morning that, when closed, the hatch has a tiny bit of play. Looks like it is not seating properly.
I am Still waiting for the manuals i ordered, i really would like to fix this asap.

Thank you

You can adjust the plate that's on the hatch floor just above the bumper. Just loosen the screws and push the plate SLIGHTLY toward to car and retighten the screws. That will hold the hatch closed tighter. Just don't adjust it too far that you have to slam the hatch to close it.

HA!! Yeah, my hatch used to slam shut. Then I replaced the struts and if you're not careful, the hatch will slam you in the chin.
