603 injection pump ???
Just took my pump off to replace the bottom seal,it sat around for a few days with the bottom off so pretty much all the oil has dripped out.Do you think i should put oil in it before i put it back on the engine? I know it gets oil pumped into it when the engine runs but is there likely to be any harm done before the oil gets up to its correct level in there? If you decide to do this to your pump dont waste your money getting the gasket set from Bosch! it has a bottom seal and delivery valve o rings and i think the copper washers, the side cover gasket included is not good at all and there is little else in there that you need. The o ring for the stop lever shaft is not included nor is the seal for the rack control shaft, the gasket between the pump and governor housing is not there or the back cover on the gov housing. No o ring for the front of the pump to the engine block either. Anybody off hand know the torque on the left hand bolt that holds the advancer on ???
TIA Don

On the older models like mine there is a plug on the upper Governor Housing to dump some Oil into it if it is dry. The FSM has how much to use.
I think if you take a good look at your pump you will see that the Oil Drain area at the front of the IP is high enough to allow a pool of Oil to always be in the bottom of the IP. If you want you could add a pint or so of Oil and sit it level and let the excess drain off.

Thanks i did add oil with the pump level on the bench until some ran out the front. I also looked up the torque spec on the L/H bolt cd manual shows 40 - 50nm Don

I dont think the 603 has the fill Drain Screw as some of the older ones do, it's fed directly by the engine. I would fill it some just to prevent a dry run until you get oil pressure

Old Timer: I have the 601 engine and a question: is removing the ip possible without losing the timing? I have oil leaks as well. There isnt a real good thread about this subject. I guess Im asking-- did you use the locking tool for your project or just take a lot of care in removing?

I did use a tool to lock the pump, its a home made one that does the same as the one you buy except it is not spring loaded. I cut the head off a 7/16 dia bolt,it fits pretty tight in the hole. Then VERY carefully cut a slot exactly centered across the end of the bolt just wide enough for the tang in the pump to fit into.I dont know the timing spec for a 601 but if you can find the spec, the procedure should not differ much from the 603 and there is plenty of info on "remove/install 603 injection pump".
