82 300CD BROKEN CONNECTION, UPPER RADIATOR HOSE

Today the connection point for the upper radiator hose broke. Not sure how it happened, just started to leak. There isn't enough left to attach the hose anymore and wondering if there are any options other than replacing the entire radiator? Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

a radiator shop might be bale to replace the top section... but I imagine they will want to rebuild it on principle.

Make sure to replace your pressure cap when the time comes.

many have repaired it with a brass fitting inside the broken attachment and epoxy or JB weld. most go on to replace the rad, since it failed due to plastic fatigue.
(probably due to green coolant)

JB weld held on mine for 3 days then broke again. I've noticed these radiators expand/contract a LOT with weather. In the winter, my upper hose literally slipped off when it got cold but warming the engine up made a super tight fit (new radiator).

There was a thread a year back or so, think it was Larry Bible. anyway, the guy fixed his radiator by using a tire valve. the replaceable metal ones with the nut to screw them down.

cut the remains of the broken piece off, then remove the upper radiator hose. slide a stiff wire through the small hole towards the upper hose neck. fish out the wire, slide on the tire valve. bend the end of the wire so the valve won`t come off. pull it through the hole, screw the nut and rubber gasket on the valve. attach small hose, and your done.

I haven`t done this, but sounds dooable.

The repair is to fix the Hose Fitting that goes to the Hose to Overflow/Expansion Tank.

When I read the Post I was thinking it was the connector on the Radiator that connected the Upper Radiator Hose; the Hose that goes to the Engine.

I have replaced the top tank following the failure of the top hose attachment piece. It was PITA of a job. I dont know if you can still get replacement top tanks. I used a smear of RTV to make sure it didnt leak. The hardest bit was bending over the tabs, I only had a pair of pliers, not MB special tool. It is doable.

Sorry, not sure I explained it correct. I broke the neck off the radiator where the upper hose attaches.

I decided to just bite the bullet and buy a new one. Will be here on Wednesday. I had the money saved for a cold air intake for the turbo, but I guess that will just have to wait .

Thanks again to everyone!

Well, good thing you put it towards something that will actually be useful for your car. Do a search on here for cold air intake or K&N and you'll have hours of fun reading.

Repaired mine much like the formentioned brass fitting ,bolts and nuts isle at your local auto parts will have it.Snap off the existing piece ,drill a hole slightly under the threaded piece you will be replacing, thread in to place then apply ampel amounts of radiator compound epoxy made for radiators. The reason for the break 90% of the time is that some one leans on it while under the hood ,it doesnt take much to break or crack.

Remember, this is one situation where it doesn't pay to be "green," Only MB appropriate coolant.
