Any idea what this connection is for?

Pictures down in the corner by the battery, where a bunch of cables are routed on a 1982 300CD. Standard Mercedes 2-round pin male and 2-round pin female connections. Mine are disconnected. Line on the one end goes down along some heavy cables, can't route it.

Everything seems to work fine... Any ideas?

That looks like the front brake pad wear indicator connection.

AHA!

OK, thanks.

Ill reconnect it and see. I do not recall... on my BMW the brake lining light turns on at startup as a check. Does this happen on a w123? i.e. would I see it light up if it is connected and not light up if the connection is broken, or something like that?

THanks!

nope.
it will light up when you turn on the key, weather or not it's hooked up.
but it will stay on if the pad sensor is worn into the rotor.

Sure. My brakes are all fine... But who knows if someone got annoyed in the past. I have all receipts and no expense was spared, so I can't imagine they would have disconnected to fool the system.

That said, once on my BMW I screwed up the routing of a sensor and cut it in the suspension... I replaced it, but disconnection could have been a viable option too...

I bet the bulb on the cluster is missing or burned out.

The brake wear warning light will be on if the cable bolted to the caliper is shorted..

Just to be sure I have this straight...

Brake lining light doesn't come on unless open circuit due to sensor wearing down... Which is then followed by intermittent shorts due to rotor contact?

Or is one end 12v, and the bulb lights only when continuity is made via the rotor? The light doesn't always stay on once tripped?

However, mine is always open... Should never see a light then...

Which end, male or female goes to the brake sensor itself? I want to start there for continuity. Brakes are good...

Here is a picture of the front brake sensor. Do you still have a sensor on the brakes? If not, is there a connection for the sensor at the caliper?

The cable that passes through the fender well goes to the wheel...

Yeah, kind of tough as they both kind of go under the battery...

Im in CA right now, the car is in NJ, so it will wait a bit anyway.
