Excessive sporadic smoke on 617

Ive been watching in rear view mirror with head lights behind me. This morning at 2900 rpm no smoke then all of a sudden it just blew acouple of nasty clouds of smoke then cleared up. No noticable change in engine speed. I have noticed this happen to lessor scale from time to time. Of course it has become worse since I replaced cat with pipe. What do I have going on here?? 85 300sd 198K

Backlighting

You will see smoke more dramatically when it is backlit at night than you will during the day. If you don't see it during the day, don't worry about it too much.
Smoke and be happy.

I will be keeping an eye on this thread as the other halfs 1989 300d w124 (Uk non turbo, 603) does this.

Yes there is the usual smoke seen at night if the throttle is floored but this occurs on a constant cruise condition.

When I picked my 1990 300d up I followed her back on the 50 mile drive and I noticed her car would puff some smoke out at what seemed like regular intervals, not much but it could be seen and smelt (burning oil/blue tinged smoke)

Her car does not smoke as you would expect as if the rings or bores or valve stem seals were bad,it just seems to 'occur' every so often.

We were away the weekend and covered about 400 miles and I only noticed it the once and this was at cruising speed of 80 mph and around just under 4k revs.

The glow plug light does seem to come on every now and then which I know points to a bad pug but the car starts and runs faultless despite up to minus 8 deg C temperatures overnight.

I have wondered if when the light for the plugs comes on if the glow plugs are on ? during driving on a warm engine,or maybe a build up of oil in the engine breathers gets taken in to the cylinders and is burnt.

I did check the oil level today and she has got it quite high, probably about a litre and a half more than it should have .

Now this is with out cruise on. I am frequently looking back to see how I smoke compaired to load and throttle. This was like it just dumped way to much fuel in to engine. I did try cw turning alda. Results were incredible crispness of engine. However nailing was incredible. Like timing on a v8 engine advansed to much. Plus threw trans shifting way out. I ccw screw back out and nailing is gone shifting is nice and of course some smoke. Now this concerns me as maybe IP is on its way out.

The IP's on there cars are very robust. I would explore other options before condeming the IP.

Items to check:

Valve clearances, air filter, and last time the injectors were serviced.

The other day while climbing the pass I belched a HUGE cloud of black smoke. It was in a 83 om617 turbo. The car generally runs very clean. I was pulling a 6-7% grade and had been heavy into the pedal at 4k or more rpms for about five minutes. I was watching my rear view close because I had a dodge on my but. I was making little to no smoke then all of a sudden the truck behind me disappeared. It only lasted for a couple of seconds but was so thick I couldn't see threw it at all! It cleared back up and hasn't thrown a cloud like that since. It ran like a top the hole time. No cough or miss what so ever.

The dodge did back way off.

Sounds like injectors to me as well. Especially if its intermittent .
Possibly sticking open you could try a diesel purge.

The new fords are doing this to the point of hydro locking the cylinders. Pistons come through the block. Makes for easier trouble shooting.
