crankshaft issue with 1978 300cd- please advise!

here's what my mechanic informed me of:

The cars problem is:
The vibration damper and the
belt pulley are bolted to the crankshaft
hub with six small bolts. The crankshaft
hub is bolted to the engine with
one large center bolt. It is this large bolt
that worked its way loose causing the
crankshaft hub to break away from its
woodruff keys and cease turning the fan
belts while the engine was running. The end
of the crankshaft wore down preventing a
proper fit of a replacement crankshaft hub.
The proper repair is to remove the crankshaft
to have it repaired or replaced. Very expensive.

he thinks i should sell the thing for parts. wondering about other opinions.

Search here. There are at least a couple of thread describing the drilling of new holes on the balancer and crank for the pins. One within the last six months I think. It doesn't have woodruff keys, it has round pins. cutting slots for woodruff keys would be more difficult.

If you like the car, just replace the engine. You could even go with a swap out for a turbo set up, but IIRC, you would need the tranny as well.

Good coupes are getting hard to find.

If you part it, or sell it to the mechanic, what do you think he would do? He might replace the engine and drive it, or even sell it.

I'd look for a donor car with cosmetic body issues and a strong motor for 500 to 1000 and swap the motor over.

Replacing the crank is also an option. These hb failures are usually the result of someone who doesn't know what they are doing damaging the pins while installing the hb.

Did this mechanic work on the hb earlier?

I'd say find a good used crankshaft and just replace it. This would require removing the engine, flipping it over, and removing the pan and crankshaft. You would not need to mess with the upper part of the engine, and parts would include the crankshaft, new bearings and new seals (and balancer of course).

How is the rest of the car? Theres probably no way around your problem that doesn't involve major surgery. To me if the cars not rusty and its been well kept, the engine is worth replacing for sure. Swapping in a crank isn't that big of a deal as far as "major" projects go. Can you do the work yourself?

Replacement engine? Are you kidding? The parts to replace this are less than 100 bucks. Ask W Hunter about this.

Tell you what: send me a pic of the vehicle, I'll buy it from you for 250.00 and I'll tow it away--to my garage for about a week in my spare time.

This is NOT an engine breaker by any means.
