Having real trouble replacing turbo oil tube seals
1983 300D. Boy am I having fun. I spent about 3 hours today trying to replace the gasket, two o rings and the seal for the turbo oil return tube. No luck.
I was able to remove the two top bolts (that took an hour), but there isn't enough room to move the tube much. I found some instructions on another web site that recommends removing the lower oil pan, and driving the lower tube up with a drift. I guess I'll I try that plan some other day. There just isn't enough room to work without removing the turbo, but I don't want to do that. If anyone has any other suggestions, I'm open. Thanks Joe PS. I was able to repair my 1980 240D grill insert, and replace the sway bar links. |

240J - I found it easiest just to bite the bullet and remove the turbo and intake manifold. It gave me an opportunity to clean everything up. Why are you so reluctant to remove the turbo?

Joe:
Taking the turbo off is easier that removing the lower pan and banging around with a drift! Four bolts, the oil feed line, and the oil drain, which is already off and the exhaust connection. You may not even need to remove the oil feel line. It's heavy, but not all that bad, and you probably won't have to remove the exhaust manifold, just take it off the intake so you can move it around. The only place you can run into trouble is the exhaust manifold -- the nuts can be stuck and you will twist off the studs. I broke three of four on the Volvo, but that wasn't a problem -- I was taking the turbo in for service anyway and just had the replaced. If you have clamp rings and a flex pipe, even broken studs aren't an issue. Just don't drop anything it in and leave it there! The oil drain on the Volvo had two bolts, so it swung out of the way nicely. ***** to get it back on, though -- ended up removing the turbo for the third time to get them in (second time was to get the oil feed line back in!)
