slow takeoff until eng warms up
 

85 300SD There must be something that changes when the eng warms up, anyone know what it is? Very slow acc until temp guage shows about 60 degrees C. I'm guessing a thermo switch to some thing that changes the fuel? Thanks for any help.

Have you checked the fuel and air filters? Also diesels operate more efficiently at operating temp.

Are you only useing diesel?

Yes, this is very timely. I'm more sluggish off the line than normal. I've been reading another active thread and all fingers seem to point an ALDA adjustment.

Diesels lack a lot of there power when cold, mainly cause the compression is a bit lower than when hot. Also it depends on the type of oil your using, thick oil in colder weather will put a drag on the motor.

The car in the OP may be functioning as designed. 61x diesels are really down on power until they warm up a bit.

Yes this morning at 30*F the 82 started and idled really lumpily for a little while with lack of go and this is with new, balanced injectors but within a few minutes was smooth and strong...its a 240 after all.

Spontaneous combustion requires heat. The longer the car runs, the more heat is generated for this to happen more efficiently. My car is not a rocket when it's cold either (not a rocket anyway). Neither is our TDI.

Even on 40 degree mornings, if I have the block heater plugged in, the car runs better at initial start up. If I do not plug it in, (the car does not have starting issues either way) it's a bit more sluggish until it warm up.

Yeah apparently IDI's are more susceptible to this. I can start my car on a cold morning and peg the throttle and the car barely goes. Kinda like me in the mornings...

Don't know if it applies to your car, but on some there is a vacuum line and cut-off solenoid that modifies shifting until operating coolant temp is reached. Basically it holds a gear longer when engine is cold. Maybe yours is upshifting too soon?

Thanks for the replys. I will check the banjo bolt. Fuel and air filters are 2 thousand miles old but I have always had this problem. Car works normal when cold and boost comes on, only slugish below boost. I guess this is normal. It's just odd driving with full pedal from a stop and having to watch the tach so I don't pop my neck when the turbo comes on.

Adjusting my throttle linkages to factory spec made a huge difference in cold weather "juice" for my 85SD. The gap at IP with the peddle pressed all the way to the floor is the critical one.
