only thing missing is the A/C, but I'm guessing it was added later...
odd that the euro had a turbo .952 in it, I thought all the euro's were non turbo.
so... the head had several cracked exhaust seats, and a blown head gasket.
ya think it overheated? I at first thought the turbo was an add on to the euro motor, but since the russian vin shows a .952 turbodiesel, then that's not the case, and something else killed the motor.

While an OM617 is not overly prone to head failures such as the OM603, heat is still heat, and can crack the very robust "iron head" models too.
You can't take everything on the Russian site as gospel. There are some translation differences at the very least I'm guessing......

Funny, I have an 80 300TD that came from Belgium as well. In the original document that I got with the car, there is a booklet about adding a turbo to the engine. It explains what parts and the how to ..... I wonder if this was a popular thing to do back then???

in 80, none of the 123 cars had a turbo, and many got "upgraded" to have a turbo, or the motor...

How is it that you know the head is "out"? The head gaskets on the turbo motors tend to give up around 275k. Maybe that's what you have. The only way to crack a head that I can imagine is running one without water on the highway and just keeping going when all danger signs are ignored.

I've seen it. Its not pretty.

Perhaps filling the tank with gas would do it too.

I've pulled the head, there are several cracked seats, and the head gasket was indeed blown... no fun.

Might be a used/replacement head from overheating/warping earlier in its life, or replacement non sodium-filled valves overheating.

Any way we can blame it on WVO use or synthetic oil?
