electric option to vacuum shut off valve?

has anybody done this? is there a way to cut out the vacuum shut off valve and use an electric motor of some kind to shut off the motor?

I'm pretty sure it is theorectically possible. An electric system of some kind could be hooked to the shut off lever. But why would anyone do this? The vacuum system is pretty effective.

random out of vehicle swap question. If I wanted to use a non MB ignition, or adapt some way to activate the shut off valve without the little switchover valve on the MB ignition and most of the MB vacuum system.

I read somewhere once about rigging up one of those universal choke cables to the stop lever. 15 bucks in the "help!" section of o'reilly.

If you have to 'rig up' something, that would be a way to go, in my opinion...

When you want to shut it off, just pull the cable knob!

that would definitely work, but it wouldn't be elegant or sexy.

I once had a nissan diesel swap I bought that was like that, shut off was a cable and coat hanger through the passenger floor you tugged on, glow plugs were the horn button, and the horn was a hanging push button. That became about as irritating as you can imagine within a couple days.

Especially when the coat hanger part broke, and you had to lean under the passenger dash and find the hole in the floor to pull on the rest of it, or open the hood.

Do what I did for my remote start alarm, get one of those switchover valves from the AC system and use it to control the vacuum electronically.

You need to diagnose your problem.
Temporarily block off the door lock system, see if the engine shuts down.
Check for oil in the brown with violet vac line going to the shut off actuator.

I don't have a problem with shutting off, this is just a future question. One day id like to move an engine into my nissan HB, and was just curious on how people have resolved this.

Sounds like the A/C switchover valve is the way to go. do you have any pics of how you did that?

Vacuum into the SOV/solenoid valve bottom, solenoid middle to the shutoff valve, solenoid top should be a vent. The solenoid is a normally-open valve, when the car is on the 12v closes the valve and blocks / vents vacuum to the shutoff valve, 12v off / ignition off and the solenoid allows vacuum to the shutoff valve. The solenoid will need a ground and a 12v ignition-switched wire.

A few years back I was helping install a veg kit and the owner was using a Veg controller computer that would do everything for you, so you never had to do anything other than drive the car. The controller had a electric solenoid that you hooked into the vac system that would supply vac directly from the main vac line to the shut-off valve when you turned the key off. It worked pretty well, since the vac was coming directly from the main vac line instead of going through the ignition. But it was still vac operated.

Which valve did you use.... the ones that control the vacuum pods in the dash?

On eBay you often see small 12 volt Vacuum Pumps some cars use on their cruz control.

If you want something sexy, a simply piece of vacuum hose run into the passenger compartment is perfectly fine. A couple of hard sucks and the engine will turn right off.

Many diesel engines on trucks and heavy equipment use a solenoid that is made for that purpose.can be wired "energise to run" or "energise to stop".Ypu would probably want to wire it for energise to run that way when you turn the key off the engine stops.Should be simple to connect to your stop lever once you see how its done on other equipment.
