I figure they are cheap so i want to do it all while im under there as long as its not a project in itself... anything else while im in there?
You do not have to remove the crossmember. Just pull the transmission pan and you can easily access the spring. Here is a good write-up on the entire process.

It is convenient to do the transmission mount and the motor mounts at the same time.

Thanks ... I will go ahead and pick them up if I end up finding the B2 s busted ... so otherwise does that parts list look correct from my earlier post?

107 270 04 32 (B2 Piston) ---- is this the updated one ?
005 997 70 48 (Piston Cover Oring)
126 277 08 50 (Plastic Bushing)

126 270 44 77 (K1 springs)

126 277 02 95 (Trans Filter)
126 271 11 80 (Trans Gasket)

Am I missing anything???? how can I tell specifically which trans the car has if there is a difference?

thanks!!!

When you take the B2 piston out there will be an oil seal holding the bushing in. It can be a huge PITA to get out, many of us destroy the seal trying to get it out. You'll need to add that to your list-- It is not included in any of the writups I could find online when I did the job on mine.

Part # for mine 006 997 73 47

that quite clean and nice looking to be free! I imagined some rusted out dented nightmare which the same situation would involve where I am.

Now I really want you to succeed.

Obviously it is in the shop out of the sun, away from the spouse who is prone to measuring usage against work completed. Few spouses have any idea of how difficult a job really is and thus cannot accurately determine when one has had enough or needs a little more. Always ask for a little more. Frequently you'll receive.

So after dropping the rear mount on the trans I find that I have far less room to get at the B2 than in the how to ... im guessing because I am doing it on a 123 chassis ... there isnt even the heat sheild to remove ... I am going to try and pry the rear of the trans down and to the left to see if I can get enough room.. I will take a pic of what im working with and post it up...

Indeed always have the right tool for the job .. you wont get far in any project without a cold beer...

Wedge pieces of wood between the trans and the tunnel to push it to the side, like it mentions in the writeup.

VERY nice looking car. Definitely looks to be worth fixing. Most W123 diesels look like hell.

Update ...

I managed to get the trans pryed down far enough to get at the B2 ... im not sure if its going to be far enough to get one back in though .. it took a lot of force to lower it this much .. I put a huge metal bar in between the trans and the bottom of the car to get it to stay down while I work.

Day 2
You can just see the bar in the top left ... My accesss to the B2

Upon removal this is what I got ... Looks like Im going to be Ordering some parts and going for it!!! ....

Keep the coments and tips comming you guys have been a great help so far ... wouldnt have even thought about attempting this without this resource.... thanks again..

if the car will be left outside, put the piston cover back in the trans. it will keep dust and creachers out of the transmission while you wait for parts to arrive.
Call Whunter (buy parts link above) he'll send you the stuff you need the quickest. great prices, and advice as well.
heed his warnings to be sure!
