affordable souces for W124 axles?

found a baddly torn boot so safe to say the CV joint is probably dried out and worn beyond re-packing and re-booting.

having a tough time finding reasonably priced re-built CV axles. I found some listings that indicate all 124/300 series 1986-1995 use the same axles...then i see other listing only listing about half of the 124 cars, so nothing definitive. so i'm a bit confused...even more so if i end up buying some good used axles and trying to figure out if say a set from a 92 300D will actually fit a 1987 300TD.

I'd rather buy re-built but prices are pretty high from most every place i can find. and autozone no longer lists my axles...they used to, should bought when i could. I know what some say about autozone stuff but it's a 20+ year old used car. not gonna spend as much on axles as i spent for the car.

I kinda miss my 123 sometimes...

Is your car a '87 300TD?

If I recall correctly you can buy the inexpensive ones available for your car when you do a parts search on:

********************

I have a '93 300D and my axle flanges are designed with notches between the axle bolts that I assume are there to help keep everything together.

As a result the axles for this car that has the notches to match the axle flange are very expensive.

However, on mine and all the other W124's you can use the axles that don't have the notches.

The only thing you have to be careful of is buying an axle that DOES have the notches because you CAN NOT use those axles on an axle flange without the matching notches.

The good thing about that is that the axles that have the notches are about four times as expensive.

So, I recommend you go to the website above and buy the $62 part.
http://www.***************/catalog/1987/mercedes/300td/driveshaft_-ar-_axle/axle_assembly.html

As a four time owner of W123's and a first-time W124 owner I know where you're coming from but it's worth it.

The W124 is so much better than a W123.

It just takes a little more work to find parts for them.

I've been lookin at flea bay too but there seems to be a real lack of new 124 axles. I'm trying to cross reference some stuff and search for other MB applications on ebay that a totaly different guide i have says fits 124 as well....one of those things where two different parts has two different application lists but each has a few cars the same. Kinda like using the rosetta stone.

***********says back ordered guess i'll try the fastlane parts site.

strange. there are a lot of 124 cars out there. why so hard to find re-built axles? all the other benz models seem to have readily available axles for not too much $

Call Raxles

Only quality induced Re-Maner.

He'll sorrowfully tell you he cannot help you...
The Hard parts (Casings)for the CV joints are not available...
AND without New Parts He will not offer his lifetime warranty.
So why bother?

Everything else I been able to find is/are re-worked OE joints with
2 to 3 Hundred Thousand miles wear on them ...(Especially the ChiCom junk).
They'll bore out or reuse the damaged casings using Vise grips as Micrometers.

If your boots haven't ruptured and allowed contamination to enter the joints...
a set of New Factory Mercedes Boots (And re-lubrication in sterile conditions) will allow your axles to outlast you.
[Yes you have to dissemble the joints to replace the boots,
somethings in life are worth that little extra effort.]

bummer, one of my boots is ruptured. I find it hard to believe that with so many 124 cars out there that MB or the aftermarket no longer produces CV joints for this series.

anyway, i tried ordering from amother source. we will see what happens. guess i'll save my old OEM ones though and see if I can rebuild them in my spare time.

Semantic Confusion

Odie,

You misunderstood my RANT on half shafts.

The OE CV joints are not made available to the Aftermarket rebuilders.
(The OE CV joints are of such Quality when compared to everything else
as to make the NON-OE CV Joints JUNK.)

Mercedes has no trouble accessing New CV Joints ,
for some reason,
They are The only customer of OE CV Joint supplier.
(They get them as a package deal in the Half Shafts from the manufacturer.)
AND YOU can only get the New CV Joints as part of new axles.

Kinda Weird,Huh?

Maybe,Uncle Vito moonlights for Stuttgart in their relationship with the OE
Half Shaft supplier?

YES, by all means, If yours don't have any alien substances...Grit,Dirt,Dust...
inside the Joints
Cleaning them and re-lubing and rebooting [With Mercedes Boots] is the
Best (And least expensive) solution.

well, UPS tracking says my new/re-built? axles are on my door step.. we will see what has actually shown up and if they actually fit. If all is well then that's a pair of 124 axles for under $150 bucks delivered.

Still gonna keep the old OEM axles and see if I can re-pack and re-boot them.

Tobybul, last time he was here was 3 months ago.
might have to send him an e-mail.

Better start pulling all the good axles you come across in the yards. there is a bunch of them getting crushed monthly.
