82 300D cracked radiator hose
Hi All!
Larondo has a slight problem. I am trying to fix it myself. It's the short little hose connecting the thermostate housing and the cylinder head. It's cracked and leaking. It seems I have to remove the entire attachment from the cylinder head to be able to replace the short piece of hose? It seems there are at least 3 bolts mounting the fixture (w/ sensors, etc) to the cyl. head. I wonder if there is a gasket between this fixture and the head? I will post some pics later to give a better visual. I am sure some of you are well familiar with this replacement and may have tips on how to best go about.

You have to remove the manifold bypass valve flex connector, the bypass valve, the heat shield, and the two bolts that hold the thermostat housing to the block. Push the mounting bracket that comes off with the two bolts down the hoses a little to get clearance. There is enough flex to the housing itself with the radiator hoses left on to get the new short hose on. Check the tightness of your chain tensioner bolts while you are in there.
Yes, there is a gasket where the housing mates with the block. You will have to drain the radiator and at least some of the block if you don't want a shower of antifreeze to come gushing out. Last edited by Carpenterman; 03-24-2010 at 10:27 AM. |

You are better off removing the lower radiator hose as well, That way you can clean the mating surfaces of the housing and the head. I used a 41 mm inner diameter section of hose bought from O-Reilly. I bought a 12" section origianlly, because my Nissan truck has a similiar set up. $11 for the 12" section of hose.

Thanks for the tips!
The 41 mm inside diameter is something I was looking for. There is a big wholesaler down the freeway, The Hoseman. They have about every imaginable hose. Just in case I can't find it anywhere else. What is that gasket made of? A rubber O-ring, a paper gasket or can I use something out of a tube? Thanks again for all the input.

It's a paper gasket. Cheap enough to get if you can wait a few days. Or buy some gasket material and make your own. Dealer might have it in stock. I don't like to use RTV unless I absolutely have to, but each to his own.

I got the hose and gasket from the dealer a couple years ago. Gasket was stock $2 or $3 IIRC. I think I had to wait for the hose though; he sold me about 5 or 6".
