Question 84 190D thumping noise when steering is at full lock

My project car gives a metallic clunking ( thumping ) noise when I try to do a 3 points U turn with the steering at full lock. I heard it when it is on full left turn lock. Did not try full right turn lock. It is a 26 years old car so I expect some issues with the suspension. Can anyone gives me some pointer as to what could be wrong? Front strut/coil or others. Otherwise the car drives well.

Is this noise when the wheel is at lock but your foot is on the brake and the car is stationary? (Can you make it thump at wheel lock in Park?) Or does it thump only in motion?

If it's stationary, then I suspect you COULD be hearing the power steering pump complaining. I've always been told by everybody in the family who grew up around engines that power steering pumps don't like to be forced to full lock, so you should go to lock and then back off a fraction of a turn. Every car I've ever been in, Benzes included, makes pump noise (some sound like a squeal, some like an air whoosh, some like a rattle, some like... you name it) when you're at full lock and all you have to do is back off about 1 radial inch on the wheel and it quiets down.

If it's making the noise as a moving part while the car is moving, then it's something I know nothing of.

May be I did not describe the sound correctly. It is definitely metallic sound. I am just soliciting ideas.

I had a similar issue, and it turned out that the wheel weight on the inside of the tire was hitting the end of the tie-rod. I think an accident from a PO bent something just enough to allow the weight to hit the wheel when I turned hard. I had the wheel weight put on the outside of the wheel and the problem when away. So you might have a look at both of the front wheel weights and see if you can see any proof of rubbing.
