Newbie 300SD

I finally did it, brought an 84 300SD, now I need to fix all the little things that always pop up. First priority is the speedometer is not working, where do I start, is it a sensor or a cable ? What is it called, I tried doing searches for "speedometer Cable", that didn't work.

Wilhelm,

Welcome to the Forum and congrats on your new (to you) Benz!

First off try a Google search for your car. From the Tech Help forum, select 'Search' and then try the Google search option at the bottom. Type in '300SD speedometer cable' and you will get plenty of info.

I'd start by checking the cable integrity where it meets the tranny.

Good luck!

p.s. you might want to add your car's year and model and mileage to your signature so people know what you are referring to for future posts.

Chris

I suspect it's electronic

I can't seem to find a cable for it under parts at "Fastlane" and I suspect it is electronic. I would say pull it out would be a first good step. If it is electronic a speedo shop might repair it or the sensor might be bad, who knows. I would say drive it respectfully without the working speed odometer and find out what else the car needs. Then when you go to the "Pick and Pull" you can be on the lookout for anything else you might need. You will soon find out that the junkyard is an excellent source of many parts.

Jim's right, did a quick check and it appears that SD's dont use a cable.

Here is some info that may be helpful -
