I feel you fellows have done your best at encouraging him to keep on going.. He needed and probably does really appreciate the effort.

For common interest I have done some calculations based on the cars fuel tank. Not the station wagons tank. That is an enigma to me.

It does appear that with a strong normal lift pump you can go about 120-140 miles till the vacuum from what started as totally closed vent and an almost full tank of fuel equalises the pulling pressure of a good lift pump.

This information was extrapolated from a car I purchased quite some time ago and may still be in error. Things like the actual amount of air above the fuel when you put the fuel cap on will indeed change the distances a lot I believe.

That is why I felt other than if the tank configuaration of the station wagon was radically effecting things he should have got more than 40 miles till slow down occured with a vent problem. Although it is very hard to be certain of things at times as variables always seem to interfere.

That got me to thinking about the past 31 years of car buying/selling. I've only bought three cars in that timeframe - two of them new. The two out of the three I sold were one with 269K miles and one with 305K miles - were in nearly tip-top mechanical & decent appearance shape. The new owners got a lot of useage from them - since everything on them worked and tons of parts replacements were done when I sold them. So I know what you mean about selling a good used car in a private sale.

Home safe. Now to compile a list of what is wrong and then prioritize it.

(excuse the tarp on the roof of the house. My GF's uncle is coming in a week or so to replace the whole thing.)

looks good !!!
I think you will soon have a sweet diesel wagon.
Once you do a bit of overdue maintenance, it will do 450 mile trips without missing a beat.
Do your self a favor & read as many threads as you can on maintenance items you plan to do. The info you can get from this forum is far greater than you will ever get from a local mechanic or workshop manual.

Good Luck !!!!

I love white wagons (or is that faded yellow I see). What color is the interior? More pictures, please. Oh, and some back story about the purchase, etc.

First priority: Add the Year, Make Model to your signature line/profile..

I suggest you have a GTG, all the local members will be happy to drool on your car, and point out issues + how to fix them...

I like your house guy! Do you live near Augusta, GA.? I lived in Augusta when I was assigned to GA. & FL. when training in sales in '73.

Not far from Augusta. We're in Athens.

I started a new thread to track the maintenance on the car. I figured it was a better idea than to keep bumping this thread.

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?p=2437069

I'll add some photos here when I get home tonight.

not too bad lookin, I hope you have the cover for your fuse box, those dont take kindly to getting too wet. also I'd take care of the rust ASAP, it tends to spread Fast due to the moist heat etc. looks like a great wagon tho

Yeah, I have the fuse box cover. You just caught me in the middle of changing fuses.

I'll get started on that rust.
