1994 C250 diesel won't start

I'm in Ireland and have an "over here" Mercedes but I'd think most of the engine components lay out the same as a U.S. model.

I bought this Benz a couple weeks ago when I moved over and have put 2,000 miles on it with no problems.

Every morning touch the key, the engine turns over a couple of times and kicks off and runs like a top.

Yesterday my family were out looking at houses so lots of starting and stopping and never a problem. Touch the key and she cranks. Also driving up to 80mph and no problem.

I WILL SAY THAT A COUPLE OF DAYS AGO I DID START TO SMELL DIESEL. I LOOKED AND COULD FIND NO LEAKS BUT THOUGHT I'D TAKE IT INTO THE SHOP THIS MONDAY. BUT IT IS SATURDAY AND MONDAY IS A LONG WAY AWAY.

So this morning I went out, turned the key to position 1, the glow plug indicator lit for several seconds, then went out, and I cranked the engine. Nothing. Repeat. Noting. Repeat and crank a long time. Nothing. Repeat and crank a l-o-n-g time. Nothing. Because everything worked fine yesterday and nothing this morning, like someone just flipped the car to off, I'm thinking I've got a fuel problem.

Since I just moved over here I have no tools yet (to check glow plugs) but I'm assuming that the long delay on the glow plug when the engine was cold tells me I've got "spark". (When the engine has been hot the glow plug light barely stays on a second so again, I assume that it is sensing how hot or cold the plugs are.)

I reset the alarm system as I've read that can be a problem but again no start.

I took the gas cap off thinking I might have an airlock and made sure the vent tube in the trunk was unobstructed but again, no go.

I checked all the fuses and all is good there.

The air filter is new. The fuel filter is new.

I unscrewed the three fuel lines I could get to without pulling the manifold off and had my son crank the engine but I never saw any fuel being pumped out of the box.

So I'm thinking I've got a fuel pump or fuel pump solenoid problem. Or maybe it is something else . . . ?

Anyway, where is the pump and solenoid located on this model. Maybe I've got a broken wire? Can you hear the fuel pump run once the key is turned on and it is energized? Any other ideas on what may be my problem?

You've the 5 cylinder version of the OM606 (Engine)

The OM605.
We were never lucky enough to get over here!
[your engine has TWIN overhead Camshafts and 20 valves]

The O-rings (At the ends of the fuel lines and the Plastic Fuel lines themselves)
are Known High Failure Rate Items.
You've got a Fuel LINE Leak!!! AND anywhere Fuel can LEAK air can be sucked In!


The Injection Pump is Mechanical ,and you will not "Hear" it over the Engine.
The only Fuel Transfer Pump is the Lift Pump on the side of the Injection Pump.(It's mechanical also)

There is a Member here spock505 who has the same engine,and as you can see
HAD a world of troubles, that he rectified, caused by WVO.

Although,over here when an OM606 owner has these issues they just replace
the Plastic lines and o-rings.
