190 transmission question

I just found a guy locally that has some 190's laying around, doesn't know anything about them. So I go take a look.

2 of them have manual transmissions, just what I am looking for. I run the VIN's via russian site. One is a standard 190d with om601 engine and 5 spd transmission. The other one is a M102 engine with 5spd. The question is...

Which one do I want for my '87 300d? I want to do a 5spd swap. The 190d has 200k on it and the other 100k. I forgot to look at the rear end ratio's while I was there.

I need to have an idea what tools to take to pull the transmission, shifter stuff, pedal ass'y, drive shaft. Do you think I can do it myself? I have put a transmmison in a f150 by myself but I was much younger.

Edit..
190d is 717.410
190e is 717.411

Gear Ratio
717.404----------------4.08, 2.52, 1.77, 1.26, 1.00, R4.16, D3.07
717.410----------------4.23, 2.36, 1.49, 1.00, 0.84(0.81), R4.63, D3.42(3.23) (3.91>11/85)
717.411----------------3.91, 2.32, 1.42, 1.00, 0.78

I know very little about gear ratio's.

Any help would be great

PS..

The 190e appears to be a graymarket. VIN site says "190 E AUSTRALIA" and the options list trunk triangle and what not.

No idea's?

I am going to nab one of these transmissions on Monday morning. I will get the gasser tranny if no one tells me differently. I am not pulling a whole other transmission to get the diesel flywheel either. I will just buy a new one.

Both transmissions are the same thing (if I remember correctly, lots of people take the diesel 5-speed's and put them in their 2.3's), however I do not think they will bolt up to a 603 like they would an M102/601.

The cost of a new flywheel may be cost prohibitive versus the option of taking the used one. Check the price if you have not already. I may be wrong.

If you are getting the transmission pretty cheap you could also consider getting both of them and selling one to give you a basically free transmission for your car. If both clutches are identical you get pick of the litter there as well.

oh, and all OM60x and M10x transmissions will bolt up to any M10x or OM60x engine.

P.S. can you snag the pedal cluster, clutch master and clutch hard line out of the one you aren't going to use?

My correspondence friend is urging me to go with the 190d transmission. He thinks I really need the low gears with my 2.65 rear end but cautions about the really tall 5th gear. He thinks it would be the best transmission out of the two to use until I swapped rear ends. He actually want's me to get both complete 5spd "kits" and decided witch one I want and sell the other. I dont know if I want to pull 2 transmissions at the same time. Depends how well it goes with the first.

I run a 2.65 in my turbo - its not for spirited starts but it works just great.

the top gear is really steep but its very nice for cruising.

get the gasser trans if you want a more efficient cruise, get the diesel trans for a more spirited 1st gear start.

pulling the trans is very easy, un bolt the guibo on the trans, drop the trans mount and you can get to every bolt with extensions.

the D transmission uses a heavier flywheel which some people like more but I like the light E flywheel on my OM602.961 personally. use only the clutch/flywheel from the D on the D trans and the same goes for the E transmission.

if you end up not removing and selling the 2nd kit, let me know, I desperately need a few parts form a Manual 190E/D 300E/D

I know people seem to like the heavier diesel flywheel but my friend says the 6 cylinder om603 is smoother than the 5 cylinders and it really doesn't matter. So who knows.. I will pull them both if I can.

I am getting ready to go today. I will get a pic of the om601 for you. It looked pretty much complete when I was there last. I hope to come home with a wagon full of transmissions. Wish me luck.

Took me 3 hours but I came home with: 1 transmission(going back for the other), 2 shifters with linkage, 2 pedal assembly's, 1 drive shaft(going back), 2 w201 console trim(as requested by friend), 1 clutch assembly, 1 fly wheel, throw out bearing, some other random bearing from flywheel, 2 drive in speaker, 2 brown MB hub caps, 1 clutch master cylinder with related hoses/lines, 1 transmission bracket, all related electrical connectors and 1 rubber boot for clutch line/floor pass through.

I forgot/lost: 1 bell housing bolt(hope to find it later), 1 clutch line hold down clamp.

Ran out of time to get the other transmission. I will go back this week. No major problems just some wrenching. I did have to utilize my pipe wrench to convince an exhaust bracket that it was not going to keep me from my transmission.

Once I get the other one I will clean them up and make a decision on which one to use/sell.

that random bearing is a pilot bearing and you'll want to replace it anyway.
