Headlights turn on the wipers.

So here is an interesting problem I encountered last night.

I had my friend chaeffering me around to parties (short straw DD). Everytime he started the car and turned the headlights on the wipers would engage one full run cycle.

I thought he was being dumb and hitting the stalk, but he wasn't.

When I moved my car at the end of our festivities I ended up starting and stopping the car with the lights and I was able to recreate the problem everytime.

So basically my gremlin only appears when the car is started and the headlights turn on. The wipers will run one full rotation. This only happens after the engine is started and doesn't happen again.

The fuse looks fine, so I'm not sure where to begin looking. I'm guessing a bad ground, but every other electrical toy works without complaint.

Where should I begin looking?

Whip out the wiring diagram

AND see where (IF?) the two have interfaces other than the grounding system.

They do, can't run the wipers without the headlamps on.

WTF?
are we talking legally in some states, or mechanically in this car?
I am unaware of any relay that locks out the wipers when the headlights are off...

I thought that too, but I didn't want to say anything

On a side note it also appears my intermittent wiper setting switches to low. I think my relay is on the way out.

Is it possible to swap the wiper relay for another one located in the car as a test ? I want to say that the turn signal relay is the same, but i'm not sure.

I'd service all of the fuses in the fuse box, especially fuse #6.

My mistake, I thought that you meant the headlamp wipers.

In my experience, wacky stuff like this is usually a bad ground. If my very faint memory serves, there is a ground point near or below the drivers headlight. I would start by disassembling and cleaning it up.

I had something similar on my '87 wagon; it was so long ago that I can't recall the exact symptoms. I found it easiest to build and run a new ground strap from the ground spider where all the (brown) wires converged to another point on the frame. Fixed it for good.

Happy hunting.

Turn switch mechanisium most likely.I had mine go out 3 months ago,it had felt loose since I bought it .One day my horn goes off while Im turning with the signal on , at night I would turn and the brights would come on and off with the horn .Made for a parade of on lookers.Replaced with a junkyard unit for $30.
