Axle boots 300td

I have a 1983 300 turbo diesel and the rear axle boots are cracking and to the point of splitting. Anyone have any tips, tricks,or a link somewhere to make it any easier? I thought I saw something here once before on that topic but I can't find it now. Thanks.

Can you give up the use of the car for a while? If so, Id try to find the right lubricant and get yours rebooted... provided they operate properly.

You might also be proactive and try to wrap the boots in plastic or something so when they do crack, dust wont get in as easily. But get them done!!!

Hello,
Like I posted on a topic last week my dad's W115 is going to need rebooting VERY soon, there is a simple method I use which requires no cutting, boiling or stretching over the boots, I dont think you can stretch over the OEM boots as they are very strong, but you can easily replace the boots with OEM's with this simple method, I'm thinking of making a video soon most likely this week end in which I will explain how ppl could reboot there CV's with OEM boots once and for all without stretching or cutting them, if you could hang on for just a few days.... you could have genuine OEM boots which last longer, don't use non OEM flex boots they are not genuine and they give up in no time, also dont try to stretch over the OEM boots as they are not made for that and may crack, I tried writing down the method and posting it but ppl found it just too complicated and puzzling to read and understand how to do it so I guess the video will explain better, the CV's are filled with gear oil so if they had split the oil would have all come out leaving the joints with no lubrication, I recommend using some CV grease till you have replaced the boots if you really have to use the car

10,000's of boots have quite successfully been 'stretched' and installed using the Astoria boot gun.

I am pretty sure that I read a post on here some time back that talked about stretching the boots. I think it had something to do with a funnel but I don't remember. I take it that the axles cannot be disassembled for boot replacement??

boots looks very tired or brittle

Is there any spray on stuffs that can make a tired looking boot more supple? And to extend its useful life before rebooting is needed.

Mercedes CV Joint Boots

YES, MB "Axles"/"Half Shafts" can be dis-assembled to reboot with FACTORY
boots. It's a little more effort...but, then the best things often require effort.

I do not believe the Factory type Boots can be stretched; even with the Astoria Gun.
In the Service Manual they show using a Hydraulic Press to take apart 1 end of the Axle so that booth Boots can be slide over the shaft. This is done on the Homokinetic Axles; the ones that have what I call a "Can" on each end.

I read somewhere that the other style of Axle the Annular one; the one that one end is held together with Bolts on the Differential end; can be Rebooted by taking it apart. However, it was not said what boots and I have seen no procedure posted.

I have Rebuilt Axles with the Factory Type Boots and they do not feel that flexible. in fact they feel some what dry and inelastic (most likely aftermarket) .
I saying this because I think that the non-stock Boots that have the ability to be stretched are probably made of better material; so I do not see why the non-stock ones should be avoided.

I'll call them and confirm whether or not factory MB boots can be installed with mine.

I a curious; is there a specific reason why someone would want to use the Factory Style Axle Boots?
Is it a cosmetic issue or is there a practical reason?

So far I have not read anything that detracts from the use of the Flexx or similar Dorman made Boots after they are installed.

I ask a question way back if Tire Paint might extend the life of the Boots as they seem to crack from the outside in.
No one had any experience with that.

About that time I bought a bottle of Black Tire Paint (to paint my derlict Motor Home Tires in hopes of preserving the side walls).
I never got around to Painting the Motor Home tires I bought it for so I never painted the Axle Boots to see if it would work.

I also have never used Tire Paint on Tires. Someone who has can chime in and let us konw if the Paint helps preserve the exterior of the Tires. If so it might help preserve the Axle Boots.

I talked with a guy yesterday who said he had good experience with cleaning the boots with brake cleaner, then swiping a thin layer of black silicone circumferentially around the concavities where they tend to crack. Sounds like a good idea.

I've always wondered if consistent use of 303 wouldn't help keep the rubber from drying out.
