190D HVAC Issues

I have recently bought an 1987 190D and the HVAC issues are driving my crazy. The temp wheel does nothing, directional buttons do nothing, lights do not work and side vents broken. Blower works. Heat only wafts out the defrost and side vents. A/C woks, sort of. It blows from the center vents only and someone has put a switch on the dash that turns the compressor on. I have no idea where to start. Any pointers? There seems to be a lot of W124 info but not so much w201.

switches (center HVAC button module) easy to remove, and only has two connectors. it all routes through that one box

I may have a spare somewhere in my garage, can't remember

I am assuming that gas and diesel ones are the same. Is it locacted behind the buttons? I will be going by the wrecking yard on thurs. Do the side vents pop out pretty easily?
