Glove Box And Exterior locks

Hello, I believe someone has replaced the ignition lock on my 85 300sd. I did not get a key that fits the doors, so I pulled off the glove box latch and removed the glove box lock cylinder. Does anyone know if the glove box lock cylinder has the same number and type tumblers as the door locks?
If so, it would be REALLY easy to take this lock cylinder to a locksmith to have it rekeyed, and therefore not have to pull door panels off

Thanks,
Mark in NC

I'm fairly certain it is. the glovebox is security keyed like the trunk lock is. valet key will not work.
a simple thing would be just go to the dealer, and have them get you the original vin mached ignition tumbler. it'll come with a key. then you will have the correct key for the doors. while you are there, ask for a valet key as well. it's good to have one.
46.00 for tumbler, 22 for valet key.

I have been unable to get valet keys for the last two cars for which I have tried. Perhaps it is something about my local dealer.

Yeah the square master key will unlock the trunk and glove box. The round valet keys will only start the car and unlock the doors.

I'm pretty sure the dealer can make both keys with just your VIN. Proof of ownership will be required, but you should have that in your car at all times anyway.

VIN

All you need to do is go to a Mercedes dealership and give the vin number of your car to the parts dept. and they can cut you a key for around $29.

I was told by my local MB dealer that I needed proof of ownership and that they would also have to see the car to issue new keys. Which is strange considering that your car could be located miles away from the dealership with no way of starting it to drive it there.....

Thumbs up

Been there done that and about to go again with the new 240D. Yup, you gotta take your title/registration along with the car so the parts guy can verify you're not getting keys for the ride up the street you've been eyeing. But it's oh so nice to have a factory steel key to rule all the tumblers with! Did it on our 300DT and this new 240D has the same deal it did, one key for the ignition and another for everything else. Plus they're all brass keys. Pleh!

Please indicate which franchisee will vend:
A VIN "Tumbler" @ $46.00
and
A VIN Valet key @ $22.00

[The INSANE MB Franchise here thinks they're gonna get $100.00++ for just a

Thank You so Very Much.

Just a little FYI on this lock subject. I was able to get my trunk lock cylinder repaired by a local independent shop that specializes in MB. Tumblers had failed. I removed the lock cylinder & gave them the key & cylinder. Local locksmiths would not attempt to repair it. The nearest MB dealer is 100 miles away. Saved alot of $ & hassle. they are also bonded through an MB dealer in Phoenix to do some dealer only functions, including the whole new key & lock cylinder thing.

Soooo, I stopped by Hendrick MB in Hickory, NC and purchased a $30 key - awaiting delivery. I also noticed a horn in the engine compartment near the passenger side front at the EGR vacuum solenoid. Does anyone know if this is an alarm system? It appears to be stock. If so, how did that system function w/o a remote? or Is this a magical function of the master key and central locking system?
