I live about 4 blocks from Butler Universities campus... so yesterday I was otherwise entertained, no transmission mission.
Today was a new day. Went to harbor freight and got 2 large pry bars in different styles. 10 mins and 2 loud pops later... I got them apart. Pilot bearing looked ok although some sorta washer came out that was bent in half. The clutch popped a rivet or two. Now the fun begins... after I buy two more jack stands

I had the same problem separating a 240D from it's tranny. I could rotate the housing so I knew there were no more bolts. After much wiggling, jiggling, lifting, pulling and prying, and verbal persuasion I finally got them apart.

is there any indication of what caused the hangup? looks pretty clean, was the input shaft spline stuck in the clutch disc?

That is my guess. pressure plate came out perfect but the clutch is trashed. I wanted to use that clutch for testing.. now I have to find another one.
