E300D Fan clutch bolt tool - T55 Torx :-(
Hi,
I have a 1996 E300D.....I have had to replace the fan clutch and fan clutch bolt.....the new bolts, that come from the dealer, apparently have a T55 torx head on them now:-( in lieu of the old 8mm allen that came originally with the vehicle......any ideas on what I can do for a tool to tighten it up? Thanks in advance! Brian |
Your parts stores don't sell a torx-square adapter? I have a whole set of torx that fit onto a 3/8" square-drive ratchet.
Or put the old bolts back in, or go to a hardware shop and get other new bolts that are allen/hex? Or bring a six pack (grease) and $40 (deposit) to the local mechanic and borrow his for 30 minutes? |
Hi James,
Does your set come with a T55?....I have a similar set but it only goes up to T50....where did you buy yours? The old bolt is stripped, that is why I bought a new one.....this is a special bolt that IMO must be the mercedes part as it must fit into the fan clutch hole.....so I believe I am stuck with the torx bolt.....I would like to use a bit, perhaps with a wrench, but, so far, I have not found one that big......can someone point me to someone who might carry one? Thanks! |
A kwik google shows Lisle 26650 as the one. Lisle is available pretty much everywhere but WallOLeadFilledChineseCadmiumCoatedCrap.
Your alias led me to believe you were in Oz. Your siggy /profile doesn't indicate anything otherwise useful. YMMV? |
I was looking for a T55 socket not long ago, I ended buying this kinchrome set on ebay that went up to T60.
If you just want a single T55 and can't find one locally you can get one on ebay for about 10 bucks. |
I had the same problem for my W123 - the solution is indeed to buy some Torx sockets. I bought several sizes either side of the size I needed in expectation of the next time I have to get a new bolt from the dealer!

I just got back from Northern tool....the guy there told me they had nothing like what I wanted, however, I looked on my own and found a set of torx bits that go up to T60....the end for the larger ones is the same size as a 10mm wrench...that is what I am going to use!....thanks for the responses!!
