Rear Window will only go one direction: up or down

I choose UP of course but...

Sorry to repeat common problems, however I hope some resident expert will recognize this issue faster then I can navigate searches and DIYs

My right rear window on a 1977 300D went down to no return yesterday; right before the southern pollen dump! Those promiscuous pines!

Well I am fortunate to have a donor and tested a spare motor; here is the odd and hopefully obvious issue = the switches (front or rear) will only power a window motor one direction???? not the other
Being an older style (here it was a smart option they should have kept!) even the rear window wiring has an in-line terminal connector for the 2 wires coming from the switch going to motor (just like all front windows on 123's). I reversed this and now the switches raise the windows (yeah! no rain) but they will not lower????

Does anyone recognize or suggest a common method to hunt down the issue here?

Simply put again: window switches will only move motor in one direction!

Most probably, the wire which is normally positive for the "up" direction is broken.

After you trouble shoot the wiring and everthing seems OK I would not discount that the Rear Window Mounting Plate is warped/bent and that is what is stopping it. I believe if they bind up enough the Window Relay cuts off the power to the window in that directionl.

From what you are saying then both wires are ok and I would say the switch needs cleaning as it sounds like it is not making contact on the normal up points. There are a lot of write ups about cleaning switches. Depending on which way you want the window to go one wire goes to ground and the other gets 12 volts and then when you want the window to go the other way it reverses this.
