1982 300TD Alternator Belt Woes

When I bought my 1982 300TD I was told by the PO that the battery wasn't charging. He had pulled the alternator and it had tested good but still the battery wouldn't charged. When I got it home I noticed some wire wrapped around the fan and vstech diagnosed the wire as a broken alternator belt.

Today I received a replacement belt pair in the mail and set forth to replace them. After spending most of my working day searching the forums I got home and attempted to lubricate what I think in the adjuster nut/bolt combo only to find that it might be missing. Can someone please look at the photos below and let me know if the PO broke the nut?

Also, should I be able to turn the belts by hand? They don't move an inch.

the "nut" is about 1.5 inches long. I think i see it in your picture. the threaded part is sticking out of it. make sure an loosen all the bolts that hold the alternator on before turning the nut. the threaded shaft is very weak and can bend and snap if to much force is applied. this happens because you are trying to move the alternator with the other bolts still tight. there are 3 bolts that need to be loose. the bolt with the adjuster shaft attached to it. one next to that closer to the engine that holds the braked to the block, this is so the bracket can pivot while being adjusted. and the lower alternator bolt so the alternator can pivot.
