Axle fluid....

What type of fluid or lube is everyone using in the rear axles after boot replacement? Would like to be able to use something available locally and not have to use the MB dealer. Thanks.

If you do a search on rear axles or something like that you should find plenty of discussion about the best grease.

On my 1984 300SD, I believe there was 90cc's of oil in the boots. I replaced the boots with the Astoria boots and used their grease. After long runs with the car I hear a clank clank from what appears to be the cans on the CV joints. I am thinking of removing the larger clamps and squirting in some 90 weight differential oil in there to see if the noise is eliminated.

Go to the dealer and get the right stuff... Or better yet, get it from Phil.

No sense in thinking you're smarter than the MB metalurgists who designed the parts. In another similar thread, I asked Kestas to weigh in, as he knows this stuff as his day job, but he didn't have an answer. Based upon that, if a super-knowledgable engineer doesn't have an immediate answer, Im not going to recommend anyone else go play chemist...

Heavy oil is my choice. Mercedes used it until they started to use grease eventually. The reason I favor oil is I have seen grease displaced in front cv joints to the extent one would think them partially dry. The mercedes rear joints on 123s were oil filled when new I believe. That in my opinion was one reason they lasted so well.

If the boot seals can be trusted to hold liquid oil in, I'd throw gear oil in there. 75w90 or whatever the standard is.
