617 Engine Sound / Idle Question

Hey everyone,

I've got 2 300SDs...

Take a Listen and give me your thoughts on them, see if you hear anything wrong in either.

Mine sounds like a mix of the two. Mine idles like the 2nd and revs like the 1st.

I didnt hear anything wrong with either.

#1 is perfect.

#2 has some light injector knock probably due to the very slow speed. Idle speed on the 617 should be about 750 rpm..........similar to #1.

What Brian said.

How do you raise the idle on a 617 anyways? Whats the correct method?

There is an idle adjust screw on the engine side of the IP. There is a locking nut and a flat head adjustable screw.

This might help you:
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=275062

Its different if you have a 123 I believe (or atleast the older ones) which had a different type of adjustment device.

Thanks guys. I've never actually heard a properly idling 617. Both of mine have sounded like #2 for years.

I just have to deal with some shaking issues now. #1 tends to shake a bit more than I'd like, causing the passengers inside to "jiggle" a bit. Its got 140k on it. I dont think the engine mounts, engine shocks or anything like that have ever been messed with so it could be time for those.

I'm glad to hear thats how it should sound. It sounded foreign to me, which is why I had to post up and check with the collective.

Edit: I noticed that when cold the idle is a bit lower. in #1 more like 600-650. Is this acceptable? Once warm I believe it will settle back to proper place.

#2 has a dead return line hose too. Need to replace that.

Was the A/C compressor disengaged on both?

besides what was said above, the turbo is audible on #2

Like stated above, your Idle PRM should be around 750. The first video sounds like a happy 617 engine. I'd bump the idle up enjoy the ride.

All of ours sound like #1....

You are daring to rev it that high with no load! .....with no load I stop revving around 2800-3000.....
