Question 1995 E300D 124 front end vibration

OK, so this just started suddenly a few days ago, I haven't done any work on the car previous. It had new front tires a few months ago, quality Continental tires from a trusted local dealer.

At anywhere from 20-45mph I get significant front end vibration when hitting any sort of rolling bumps. It typically only lasts about 5-10 seconds sometimes a little longer. It doesnt happen when I hit a small pothole, only when hitting bumps where both struts are moving in opposite directions at the same time. At highway speeds its fine hitting any type of bumps.

I was planning on replacing the front struts anyways, they are due and are probably original at almost 170K miles (the rear ones were I did those a few months ago)

How do I check that its not something else before I replace the struts? I'd like to do anything necessary at the same time and then get an alignment done.

Could be many things causing your problems.

I take my car to an alignment guy I trust before I replace parts.

Paying him 20 bucks is much less expensive than replacing parts that dont need to be.

My guess is that you have a combination of things going on.
Weak shocks, including steering damper.
Worn parts.
Questionable tires.

Easy free check: Disconnect one end of the steering shock absorber. Try to move it in & out. It should take signifcant effort to move it at all. If it easily moves in & out, the shock is shot, replace it.

But yes, you need to check the rest of the steering links - tie rod ends (all four), drag link ends (two), and idler arm bushings. And wheel balance, and wheel bearing adjustment... and finally alignment. Be careful with that strut replacement, the MB spring compressor is highly recommended for that job...!

I got to look at the situation yesterday, I think the ball joints are fine but the steering stabilizer is shot so I will replace that first and then the struts. Thanks for the warning on the springs, I'll just be careful and support the control arm- I did the rear ones without a spring compressor.
