Diesel starting question

An old school bus-probably around a '91- wouldn't stay running after start-up the other day.
It's a diesel. Not a benz, I know. I just need a little guidance on figuring out the system that I should be looking at for the problem.
1. Strong battery. Good crank. Outside temp has been in the 60's.
2. Hadn't been run in a month or two. Last time it ran, it wouldn't shut off when the key was turned off- this was after letting it run pretty much non-stop for 5 days in cold weather, both idling and long distance highway running. Lifted the hood, couldn't find a shut off switch. Slammed the hood shut and engine turned off.
3. Yesterday, turned the key- strong start-up, but would immediately stop running once the key was allowed to go back into the 'run' position. I'm thinking as soon as the starter disengages, it stops running.
4. With the starter engaged, if I give it gas it definitely get more fuel. So I'm thinking it's not a fuel pump issue.

Got any ideas? I know it's not a benz, but I was hoping someone could point me to the right system to check out.
Thanks.
Jay

Will need to know what Engine is in the Bus?

Just generel stuff that causes no starts: Fuel not getting to the Fuel Injection Pump (plugged filters, fuel supply pump problems and so on),
Air trapped in the Fuel InjectionLines between the Fuel Injection Pump and the Injectors (need know what Engine as they do not all have the same fuel systems),
not enough compression in the Cylinders,
If it has a glow plug system that needs to be working
If the Starting System is not cranking fast enough

This part of it sounds like you have an electrical issue that is causing the Electric Shutoff Solenoid problems. It could be in the Ignition Switch itselv or a wire some where. The way the most often worke is no voltage to them cuts off the Fuel Supply.

If it is a Detroit Diesel Engine they often have an Ergency Shut Off; a flap that covers the Blower and blocks the Air from getting into the Engine. Until the Emergency Shutoff is reset manually you will not start. There is a reset lever you would need to find to reset it.

If you cannot tell us what Engine is in the Buss; take some digital pics of the Engine and post them in this thread.

I wish he would get back to us and say what Engine he has.

Where I used to work a Trucker had his Cummins Engined Truck towed to us at the cost of $350. The wire that went to his Shutoff Solenoid had bet cut and twisted tgether and covered with Electrical Tape. All that had happend was that the Wire had come apart.

So for the sake of that improper repair on the Wire and the fact that he did not know there was a little manual over ride knob on his Shut Off Solenoid (he could have turned the Knob an restored his Fuel Flow) he paid $350 + what ever my Boss charged him.
