4-Speed Stick Issues.

The gate between first and reverse is VERY close Sometimes it's hit or miss to which one I get. And sometimes it's difficult to find second when I'm downshifting. Anyone know if this is a gearbox, shifter or linkage issue? I've tried new rubber grommets at the box ...

Probably in your shifter. Peel away the rubber boot, pull the shifter surround and see how much slop there is in the mechanism.

You're supposed to have to lift vertically upwards on the stick to hit reverse. That mechanism may be the one that's failed, because there shouldn't be any confusion at all there. If you're not lifting up on the stick, you *should* be able to slam it all the way against the left "wall" of the shift gates and go forward and hit first with no doubts. Reverse can't be hit by accident in a working shifter.

^ Agreed, and with busted... most cars have you push down to engage reverse, not so with an MB 123. The one I had was broken by, I'm guessing, someone trying to push it down, it finally did break, making it easy to grind gears trying to get into first and going too far to the left.

I dont have to lift up (or push down) to get reverse.

Does the shifter need rebuilding? If so, is it springs and bushings I need or something more fundamental?

This is a 300cd with a 4-speed taken from a Euro 300d

Thanks again

Similar discussion, not sure that anything conclusive got proved. Has a few different peoples' ideas of a checklist.

the part of the shifter that makes up the lockout mechanism is actually in the vertical part of the lower handle. I had this problem as well. There is a spring loaded deal in there, and a rubber grommet that appears to have something to do with not allowing the stick to pop up. On mine, the rubber tore, and allowed the shifter to move up when I swung it over in that direction.

I always intended to fix it, but it really never was too big an issue since I rarely downshifted into first, and was only upshifting into third in the opposite direction.

Do a little searching on recent shifter issues
A few months ago I posted an exploded parts diagram of the shifter mechanism that is in the Haynes manual. It will be helpful.

I took mine apart a couple weeks ago and replaced the "top hat" bushing (82 240D), fixed the problem for me. As 'rs" said, "do a search' on the shifter.
