Water rolls into trunk when lid is lifted

I have an 87 19d. When it rains, the trunk stays dry until it needs to be opened up. The water on the outside of the car seems to leak a but through the lock, but it mostly just cascades down either side of the lid and splashes 2 rivers of water into the center of the trunk. Any ideas on how to fix?

look at the seal on the outside. where is water collecting? how is it getting in? take a picture of the trunk with it opened. focus on each side. and post them here. it sounds like a badly installed trunk seal to me.

I had the same problem with my 190D. Water is leaked thru the lock push down button into the lid. Water is held inside the lid re-enforcement brackets until the lid is opened, then it cascades down into the trunk.

This is what I did. I removed the trunk lock and put an o-ring ( about the size of the push button ) round the push button and re-installed. No more leak. Well, it did not rain that heavy since in San Diego.:)

thanks to both you guys. ah-kay, you've described my situation perfectly. Some water drips from the lock button, and when the lid is fully raised, the water pours in. I never could figure out where it was coming from, so it makes sense that it is being retained in the lid after a rainstorm. Any idea where to get a properly sized rubber fitting? I was thinking of hitting a home depot and getting several sizes, since i will be eyeballing it.

I'm not saying this is the problem you have, but on my 240D, there is a small hole rusted into the area above the spring from a bad window seal. water is cascading into the trunk lid from that seal, and it sits until the hood is opened. I'd crawl into the trunk, and seriously inspect the area below the window seal... good luck!

Hi guys,
this is my first post.

Just found this forum, happy me, I have many questions....

I just bought a 89 190d and start to fix it a bit. I have the same problem, "waterfall" when I open the lid.

The trunk seal in in perfect shape and I strongly suspect the water coming in either from the lock or the "190d" sign. More, the PO already sealed the "2.5" sign with silicone, there must be a reason for it.

I removed a tiny rubber cap on the inside of the lid. It's close to the lower left corner. No idea what it was for, but for the moment
it allows the water to run out when the lid is closed.

brecchi, did you seal the lock and did it help?

Hey Caribean Pirate, sorry for the late reply. Law school finals have me preoccupied at the moment and I haven tbeen on here in a while. I haven't got around to sealing up the trunk lock with a rubber gasket, but ill let you know the results when I do.
