You could easily fit a 240D engine in there. Or, you could put an inline 6 cylinder gas engine if you use a radiator from a W110 230 (fits in the radiator opening for more clearance). If you are brave you could get a 5 cylinder turbo diesel engine in there, too, but you would have to relocate the oil tower, add an oil cooler, etc. (and also use a 230 radiator).

I've got a 1968 W110 200D and it is a great car. It does fine in normal driving situations (including freeway).
