85 Wagon fuel problems

A friend bought a 85 300 DT wagon. He clean the fuel tank and screen replaced all the hoses and filters. Blew the fuel lines out.
He had the timing chain replaced and the valves adjusted, went and picked it up. He was driving it home he had gone about 30 miles when he lost power and it was running rough. Up till that point it had been running like a top. I was talking to him when it happened. He had also replaced the fuel primer pump.
He noticed that when pumping the primper he was getting bubbles around the bolt for the spin on filter. So I took the bolt with new o rings off of his sedan and replaced it on the road. We could not get the the wagon to fire.
I noticed that the primer pump did not seem to stiffen like mine does when you pump it. The fuel tank was full.
When you remove the line from primer filter it would bubble back through the filter.

Any thoughts???????????????

firstly, it's a 300TD wagon...
what gunk did he blow out of the lines?
how does the primary (clear) filter look? any bits and slime?
you may have a clogged tank screen. I'd try reversing the fuel lines to bypass it temporarily.

He just did that because the vehicle is new to them. His wife likes everthing nice and fresh.
The filter looked clean but by the time I got there it was dark and everthing was seen by a flashlight.
He did reverse the lines and that did not help.

Any more thoughts????

I think it wouldn't fire because it had lost it's prime and it has not yet recovered it. Keep pumping the primer and crack some hard injection lines to get the air out.

By the way, why was the timing chain replaced? It's pretty rare for these motors to require a chain replacement.

only thought I have, is to replace the fuel filters, and to keep pumping the primer until fuel is flowing. it sounds like air in the system, having a leaking spin on bolt, could have gotten air into the IP, you may need to loosen all the injector nuts at the injector and crank until clear fuel is exiting each.

If he's got fuel leaking out around the spin-on filter bolt, he needs to replace BOTH o-rings on the bolt. 84-85 had the bolt with two o-rings and you don't use the aluminum washer.

These symptoms don't surprise me for a new-to-him 617. Flushing out a fuel system (unless you go full tilt) won't always get 100% out. And what you don't get out probably was loosened by his actions. So it stands to reason that the new filters might get clogged up.

Check/replace the primary filter again and possibly the secondary (once you get the o-rings for the bolt). it took me about 3 filters to get everything cleaned out of my system.

The timing chain was replace because it is part of the 250,000 mile service. I believe it has around 220,000 miles on it.
His wife wants it perfect and I'm sure it will get there. With that said it has a extremely clean and rust free body and window seals look like they are new.
Wish someone had garaged my 300CD for it's life but then again I would not have been able to afford it

The bolt we put in had 2 new o-rings in it.
I'm thinking now he needs to charge the battery replace primary filter and go from there.
