Vacuum-related Transmission Thump

I have (I think) a very slow vacuum leak, the symptoms of which are twofold: no center vents for the first twenty minutes and a first-to-second shifting thump which eventually smooths out. Mainly an annoyance that I'll eventually get fixed. My question: can this in any way harm the transmission? 1992 300D.

Well, perhaps "thump" is too strong a word. It's basically a hard first-second shift. So are you saying that any and all hard shifts are damaging to the trans and driveline?

If you are getting a thump & shaken in your seat on change, it will be doing no good to things like flex disks & the trans.
