1998 E300 TD laser key issues

Does anybody know the logic as to how the lazer key (this is the one that does not use the metal insert in the ignition switch) functions? I noticed that mine does not always work immediately when I put it into the ignition switch. I occasionally have to press it hard or wiggle it before I hear the steering wheel lock solenoid trigger. And no, the wheel is not tigght against the lock, rather appears the car does not recognize the key immediately.

What tells the car the key is in the ignition switch? Is there a microswitch, is it proximity sensing via RF or optical?

Any help would be appreciated. I already tried cleaning off the key's IR lense as well as the ign switch's IR reciever. New batteries also did not help.

Thanks!

ATLD.
