Wastegate Conversion and State Emission Inspection
I have read with interest the threads concerning conversion to a pressure actuated wastegate on the 90-93 2.5 Turbo (forgive me if the answer to my question is buried somewhere and I missed it.)
But...for those of you who have done this conversion AND live in states that require an emission inspection, do you pass the emission inspection with flying colors? RI does have an emission inspection. Clearly there's no point in pursuing the conversion if I might end up failing inspection. Thanks.

I do not, have not, but: The wastegate actuator conversion should have no affect on the emissions, only serves to allow boost if the other systems are malfunctioning or disconnected.

Thanks. I had wondered if the EGR being eliminated would increase emissions.

EGR reduces NOx. If your jurisdiction tests for that, you might have an issue. Here the county only tests for soot opacity, limit 55%. 617A last test was 0.0% (b100). 603A last test was 1.5% (b100, bad valve seal). Side note, biodiesel also increases NOx due to higher combustion temperatures, the exact effect EGR is combatting (by diluting with exhaust gas).

Don't change anything that is visually apparent, plugged/capped EGR lines and fittings for example might flag the car.

Keep it looking originally as possible. Keep the EGR in place with hose going to switchover valve. You don't want to raise any questions. You might not want to bring it to the dealer/authorized MB repair shop for the inspection, maybe your mom and pop place down the street. Yeap RI has to get their cut of things, but it's still better than TAXACHUSETTS. Grew up in WW.

Emmisions inspection on a diesel?
I thought we were pretty much exempt from them. Now you have me thinking about here(PA). I think I have to have the Original Equip on but no sniff or tail pipe test.

I think some of the states that abide by the CARB emissions utilize the opacity test. Basically a black smoke test, amirite?
