They were considered low spec after the rectangular euro's were introduced. They put them on the 240's, etc.
Similiar to the automotive way of same model car, say like the Malibu of the 70's. You had the Malibu and the Malibu Classic. The Malibu was a plain wrapper, while the Classic had the bells and whistles.

Very interesting! I got a set of the round looking ones off of a 1980 Euro 240D that I bought (and still have) as a parts car. The car was about as stripped of a 240 I've ever seen. No power steering, no sun roof, no air (except US aftermarket)
At that time I just assumed that they were early versions, but I put them on my 84 Euro 240D because I had them and they were better than the sealed beams. It could be that they were the round ones because they were on a stripped down model. Actually they make GREAT light! I wish someone would buy out my three 123 cars. They are all parts cars at this point. BTW, if I were on a budget and needed improved lighting on a US 123 car, I would go get some high beam sealed beams that were used for a four round sealed beam system in most cars from 1958 on into the seventies. These are 7" Diameter I think, but they will fit right in place of the fog lights in a 123 system. Then use a relay to energize them at high beam. Get a pair that are halogen. Aim them way down the road and aim your regular lights at normal level. This would be a GREAT poor boys driving light system. |

Those are the ones I was looking for. I went another route and I am happy.
Those are decent lights if the back is ok and the lens has not been compromised (chipped/holed). I would definitely ask for pictures of the backs before purchase.

They were fitted to the pre 1983 300D's sold in Australia, I think they are what you call a Euro. The light pattern is every bit as good as the later square looking ones. They are a slightly different shape than the square ones. They just fit as a replacement. I think the pre 1983 240D & 230E has them as well in Australia.

The "high line" (280E) cars were equipped with the rectangular lights from introduction as 1976 models in Europe.
Low line cars (200, 240D) had the round euro lights at point of introduction. In the early eighties, all W123 cars were equipped with the rectangular lights. Outside of the USA, of course. Jim

My '84 Euro TD came with Hella rectangular lights, but both glass lenses were broken. I fitted a set of US-spec 300D light assemblies, for $30 from the Pick-N-Pull.
I do have a set of aftermarket Euro-type 7-inch halogen lamps I may fit. Or I could try to find replacemant lenses for my original lights. My local indie MB parts place only stocks the glass for the 123 Bosch lights, but someone on this Forum said they would fit the Hellas. Any thoughts? Happy Motoring, Mark

The car is a parts car out in the pasture with blackberries(so thorny rosebushes seem tame) all around it. As far as the way it looks, the steering box looks pretty much the same except there are no hoses going to it and no pump. The ratio is not as quick as a power steering box. It drove down the road fine, but was a little clunky to park in tight quarters. |
