Urgent- '85 300TD Drivetrain Failure; stuck in OH.

Drove out to in-laws's in Millersport, Oh. (halfway between Columbus and Zanesville, just off I-70) yesterday from Williamsburg,Va. yesterday.

No problems until I was within 2 miles of destination. Pulled away from only stoplight in town, and began hearing a repetitive sound from rear of car. Frequency speeds up with vehicle speed (don't recall if it slowed with tranny upshift), and seems to lessen/disappear when coasting.

Does not sound like the hard banging of a failed axle shaft (I've had that happen before). Driveshaft flex disks maybe?

Need a pointer to a mechanic I can get the car towed to for repair. Minimal tools here.

Please reply direct to my email (david.stack@nmci-isf.com), or you can call me at 757-592-0163. No "real" internet here either, I have only my BlackBerry.

Thanks more than you know.

Dave Stack

Pretty easy to check the flexdiscs. Drive one side of the car up on the curb and there'll probably be enough room to slide underneath with a flashlight and get a look at them.
I'd be inclined to think it's an axle.

Did you check that the hub/axle shaft bolts are nice and tight?

Follow-up (no root cause yet)

OK, to begin with, thanks to those folks who've offered suggestions on possible root causes...

Still looking for a recommended shop here in the local area that I could take it to. Anyone?

I've been under the car, and there is no discernable play in the axle shafts, CV boots are intact, no apparent damage to the flex disks, wheel bearings are not showing any play. Could it be a partial seizure in a CV joint caused by a lack of grease? I would have thought this would appear on the highway when running 70, not rolling through town at 25...

I'm hesitant to put the car on the road and see if the problem still exists. It was 6:00 last evening when we arrived, and the car was great for 548 of the 550 miles.

Thanks again,
Dave

P.S. Found a coffee shop in town with WiFi, so I'm connected for the moment, but won't be as soon as I depart. Please direct any responses to my BlackBerry email, "david.stack@nmci-isf.com"

check out the inside of back wheels. any grinding marks on them? the swaybar links are known to fail and flop around causing noises on turns and low speeds.
if it's that, you can just pop them off of the bar, and all noise will disappear. not a big deal to drive without it, the rear bar does very little for handling!

So D_Ryan -- You got a lot of suggestions here and I see you've been on the forum since.

If you don't mind, would you let us know what happened?
