extreme inner tire wear

I own an 84 300d. I put it up on the lift and noticed that all of the inner rear tires are worn down to the belts! I'v really not driven the car because it was just aquired. I'm not familiar at all with the "MB IRS" If anyone out there has some insight as to whats going on it would be fantastic! Last weekend I finally set the IP pump after a completely accurate diagnosis from PS FRED THANKYOU!!!!! It idles like a 2 ton tiger!!!!!!!!!!!!Keep it up Gentlemen!!!

You need to get a four wheeled alignment - they run about $55 in these parts. I would recommend against taking it to dealer for this. Find an independent MB shop and see if they can align or can they recommend a place to you. Be ready to replace worn suspension parts if necessary.

I had the same thing happen to my car. I replaced the shocks, and had a ton of front end work done at a shop. I drove down to Atlanta (from New York) to pick up some stuff I had at a storage place, and on the way back at a rest stop in Jersey, I noticed that the tires were COMPLETELY down on the inside edges. It had me really alarmed and I drove home really slowly from there back.

I went back to the shop where I had the work done to make sure that it was aligned correctly, and he assured me it was (and I trust him). So, I went to get new tires, had it aligned AGAIN at the tire place, and I haven't had any problems in 12,000 miles.

It's scary when the inside edges wear down because the car wanders from side to side so much that it feels like you might lose control.

By the way, what did you do to adjust your injection pump? My car is idling kind of roughly. Not quite rocking, but not as nice as I'd like it.

Good luck with the tire problem.

Alex

I've read here on the forum that the sub-frame mounts often go bad in the rear suspension. These are big rubber blocks that hold up the outside of the control arm. If they get weak and compress, the outside of the tire gets higher - making the inside lower and thus wearing faster.

You very likely need new sub-frame mounts and then an alignment.

Had the same with my car... Had to have the ball joints and castor bushings replaced. Problem fixed. Oh, and have the car aligned affterwards, then aligned again in like 1000 mile or so. I find that the car aligns better once the car breaks the new suspension parts in.... Just my theory/experience.... I mean, you are putting in new parts, working with old parts... Things need time to gel (before I get the Diesel Nazis after me, this my theory and experience....) One last thing, the A-arms on these cars are also prone to wear and may need replacing. Keep this in mind!

I was very surprised to see that you were speaking of this wear on the rear. It is not uncommon for toe to be out of whack causing this on the front. I have never had ANY problems with the rear.

Has this car ever been wrecked?

Good luck,

You said you recently acquired the car?

I'd be willing to bet that the tires were worn out by being on the front end, and the seller rotated them to the back, either to milk a little more life out of them, or in hopes you wouldn't notice before buying that the car needs front-end work.

My 300sd needs some bushings, etc. on the front very soon. It wears the inside of the tires pretty quickly, as you've described.

I think MikeMover is onto something. I reread the original post and noticed that the car was just purchased.

IF the wear came from the front, it could very well be that there are no worn parts, only a misadjusted toe setting. I would get it in the air with wheels suspended and pry around on all components to see if something is loose. Pay particular attention to the steering linkage components.

Inner or outer wear on BOTH front tires equally is incorrect toe setting 99.9% of the time.

Good luck,
