how is the fan attached on the 87TD?
I gotta change my fan clutch, and vacuum pump, so I gotta get the shroud and various sundries removed. no WAY is a wrench gonna fit in there to undo the bolts, so the clutch must come off first right?
I figure I'll pull the radiator, pull the shroud, and look things over to see what's required. I'll chemically clean them both while I have everything apart(the joys of being an HVAC tech! I have access to phosphoric acid to clean the aluminum coils!!!) any pointers are welcome. I searched, and found plenty of mentions what a pain it is... looking forward to that! but no mention of how to begin! anyway, I'm pulling the clutch off the 602 in my yard, and it has a plastic fan, should I use it? or the original metal fan on the 603 in the 87? |

8mm allen goes down the middle of the clutch, attaching it to the pulley.

When I was purchasing my fan clutch I never found anything conclusive as to if the updated fan clutch would work with the stock metal fan, but several people said it worked for them just fine so I went ahead with it and have had no problems. I would however like to replace it one day with a plastic fan...replacing the metal fan with a plastic fan MUST take a load off of the engine. It is pretty noticeable when the clutch is fully engaged.
Removal as I remember is a matter of holding the pulley still while using a hex head socket, can't remember size, and unscrewing.

Not hard to do if the radiator is out. 8mm allen wrench in the center bolt,finding a way to hold the pulley can be difficult, i hook a pipe wrench over the pulley from the back edge with a piece of rubber cut from an old hose to protect the belt , sort of hard to explain.Use a small pipe wrench like 10" and only open the jaw about 1/2 inch then it will only fit on the way i use it.Wish i could explain it better.If you look thru GSXRs web site you will find a picture of the factory tool,once you see that you will catch on to how the pipe wrench goes.
I used a plastic fan 602 200 04 23 just because i thought it would be better than the old heavy metal one and lighter so maybe easier on the new clutch. Don

I bought a new clutch for my '87, it was for the metal fan.
detach the shroud, push it toward the engine, and you should be able to get to the allen bolt. With the belt still on, you might (I have twice) have enough drag while pushing on the belt, to hold the pully for loosening the bolt. A plastic fan doesn't have any significant change in engine load, it's in how efficient the blades are and how much air it moves, not the small change in weight. Since the fan doesn't engage suddenly like an electric clutch, the inertia is also not significant. I did polish the blades on mine while out of the car to reduce airflow resistance, and then coat with teflon, so mine is probably more efficient than the as-molded plastic blade. Plus it's cool. I didn't look at the fan closely, but it seems light enough to have some mag in it. Should have a stamp on it with the alloy (for recyclability), Mercedes required it on all of the parts we made for them.

Fan (11 Blade Plastic),Clutch + Bolts
All from "606" Engine [Cheaper] and works well.
(Same engagement temp on Fan Clutch) 11 Blade Fan (Plastic) 606 200 01 23 Clutch 606 200 01 22 [They claim you need new bolts (3 Ea.) #N914020-006017] as Always ,Check the EPC for Updated/Improved Parts/Numbers. Use the larger one of these to hold Fan Clutch/W.P. Pulley when "S" belt is removed. Oh! H.F.

I removed the radiator when i did mine. and i upgraded to the 606 plastic fan and clutch while i was at it.
