1992 300D - broken timing chain what exactly occurs ?

Hi to all,

I am interested to know from the perspective of a tech what exactly occurs when the timing chain breaks in a 1992 300D 2.5 T . Is the damage often limited to bent valves or is it likely to find head or even piston damage ?

thankyou one and all

If you're looking at buying a car that lost the timing chain, there's no way to know the damage without scoping the cylinders or pulling the head.

If it occurred at idle, maybe nothing to bent valves. Maybe more. At higher RPM in gear where the car will continue to spin the engine? Many things including a valve head snapping and rattling around the combustion chamber and damaging the piston/head. Possibly also cam damage?

Bent valves would mean piston head contact as well, ring damage if anything got loose.

In simple terms, piston comes up the cylinder while valves are still down, collision, then if piston is damaged rings may have broken & gouge bore. Not a nice thing at all. Best solution is a replacement motor, use the old one as a boat anchor !!
