for me, and others not in the know, how do we know when we're dealing w/ carb systems? is it a simple numerical designation?

I'm guessing the presence of a carb might be the best way to tell....

There are companies that sell special heads to convert gas power 2-cycle model engines to Diesel

If you mean carborators, then no, all diesels must be injected by nature of the engine.

All Mercedes Diesels have a "D" in the model designation, like 190D, 240D, 300D, 300SD, 300TD, etc. The numerical part represents the engine displacement- 190 is 1.9 litres, 300 is 3.0 litres.

The carberetted engines on the really old models usually had no letter, just the number- like the 230 was simply a 2.3 litre gas engine. Then there is the old S class, to which the letter S was added, as in 280S for the 2.8 litre carb version and 280SL for the fuel injected gas version (fuel injected, but not Diesel).

Simple, eh?

there were models from the fifties and earlier that used the d such as a 300d adenauer which was a gas engine.

Mercedes diesel vans always have a three digit number plus 'd'. However, the number is not the displacement in litres. ie 207d. First number is the ton rating of the chassis--2 tons. The last two digits are the tens and ones place of the horsepower rating of the engine. 207=70 horsepower (European) or 216=160 horsepower. (with a few exceptions--for instance their passenger bus (309d) is not on a 3 ton chassis to my knowledge)
When imported officially to the US as Sprinter's the vans lose these European #'s.

I have some IH Diesels with carburetors and spark plugs too.

They were use for starting and shut off after the engine was running on the Diesel cycle.
