Transmissions, are they the same?
Is a tranny from an 87 300TDT and a tranny from a 90 300E the same? Anyone know this?

Don't know for sure but I highly doubt they are the same. Most diesel trannies differ from gasser trannies.

The short version: No.
The 87 TDT transmission starts in 1st, has lower RPM shift points, and a lower stall TC. Might also have different gear ratios for the 2.65:1 rear screw and different power curve, but I'd be guessing on that. The 90 300E has 2nd-gear start and that other stuff. They are both 722.3xx transmissions so the basic box apparently will swap.

It would work, but is not ideal. I know of another member here who did that swap on their car.
