Weird 190D Clunk

My 1987 190DT has a strange issue. When I start the car in the morning I back out of the driveway, go from reverse to drive. I wait until I feel it engage drive. As I accelerate the car moves forward about 1 foot then something slips. It happens very fast, lasts for a split second then the car goes. It seems to come from the rear but it is hard to tell. I know my right rear outer CV is bad and will replace this weekend but I have looked at it while someone goes from drive to rev. and there is not much play. It may be the trans. I checked the fluid level and it is ok. Any other ideas?

My '92 300D 2.5 does the exact same thing. Does it first thing in the morning and then only again if it has been sitting for more than a couple of hours. It seems to engage normally into drive, but when you step on the gas it just kind of anemically moves forward for a second or two then a faint "clunk" from somewhere in the driveline and away we go. I think it is the tranny since it's on its way out anyway (I think, because it also has a 3-2 downshift clunk all the time that I've given up trying to adjust away). I'm interested to hear what this might be.

I'll throw a guess in the ring.

Low control pressure, probably due to internal leaks and a weak front pump. As your engine picks up RPM, the pressure comes up and downshifts it into 1st. Hot the seals swell a little and reduce leaks / increase low-rpm pressure.

Hmmm, that sounds like what it could be doing. I figured temp has something to do with it but I could understand how it would affect the diff or prop shaft. Know of any adjustments on the trans? I have considered running Trans-x, maybe a sticky valve.

Trans-X might work, but it's like crack: once you put it in it'll need it again, and I'd expect that it will shorten the life of the transmission. If it's already failing, then you do what you can to keep it on the road, BTDT.

You can test pressures, if you have or know someone with gauges: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=273776#post2430854

Any other ideas? It is getting worse. Now it does it almost every time I go from rev to drive. Does the K1 valve only control the 2-3 shift?

Did you ever check the flex disc? Particularly the front one. It may not appear to be bad but it most likely is bad. My 190E was like this. 105k miles and it had a big clunk. Upon inspection it looked fine but I decided to do it anyhow and it was TOASTED! Shifted perfect after that!

I checked them and they looked ok. I had someone go from drive to rev, back and forth while it was on ramps. It would not do it then.

Parking brake? Nope, I usually do not set it.

Also, it is a definite slip, no so much a clunk.
