No cabin air filter until '94 (or late '93).

And it was a miserable thing to get at and change, or so I have heard.

True, kind of like changing the blower. Not in the original design, so a poor add-on IMO.

This is also a good example of the care we owners must take with information sources including both parts suppliers (FEBI and others) and service manual writers (Haynes, etc.) as well as factory information such as EPC and the factory shop manuals. I find that transition models, especially the last year of a model, tend to be the worst, because the factory is getting ready for the new model, the previous model gets a few of the new goodies but the documentation is not as good. The 1985 and 1995 300D's come to mind (W123 and W124, respectively).

In the 1984-85 W123 there first appeared some of the electronic EGR goodies that then showed up on the W124 -- the Klima relay and the OVP relay -- just try finding OVP without the help of this forum! There's only one Mercedes manual that mentions its location, the 1984 "Introduction into service" book, which almost no one has.

The 1995 E300D is likewise unique in that it has the OM606 engine, modified to fit the 124 chassis and almost the same engine that the first two years of the W210 got -- but just different enough to make it harder for '95 owners to understand and service.

I just recently did the job of changing the blower motor and cabin filters in a 95 E300D.
Changing the squirrel cages was easier than I thought. I also have a source on the Bosch motor for $150 instead of the $400 + price tag of MBNA. The tricky parts were getting the cages back w/ the proper adjustment and putting all the cheap plastic stuff on top back the way it should be. Good chance to lube the wiper arm tho. If you'd like me to walk you thru it give me a call. Dave. 609-261-0696. When you see what you can save it's not all that bad.
